How to overcome those first day nerves

So, you landed the dream job in healthcare, congratulations! But as the excitement settles, a feeling might creep in: first-day nerves.  Whether you’re a seasoned professional or newly qualified, that pre-job anxiety is a universal experience.  Don’t worry, though, because we’ve all been there. Here’s a battle plan to transform those jitters into nervous energy that will propel you to a stellar first day:

Preparation is Key:

  • Research Your New Workplace: Spend some time getting familiar with the hospital, clinic, or care home. Knowing the layout and basic protocols can ease some of the “where am I?” anxieties.
  • Plan Your Outfit: Look sharp and feel confident! Review the dress code beforehand and ensure you have your ID and any necessary scrubs or uniforms ready to go.
  • Pack Smart: Pack a small notebook and pen for jotting down important information, a reusable water bottle, and snacks in case of a long day.

Mindset Matters:

  • Reframe Your Nerves: Instead of viewing anxiety as a negative, see it as excitement for a new challenge. Channel that nervous energy into a positive drive to learn and excel.
  • Positive Self-Talk: Ditch the inner critic. Replace negative thoughts with affirmations like “I am competent,” “I am a quick learner,” and “I am here to succeed.”
  • Focus on the Present: Don’t get overwhelmed by the unknown. Take things one step at a time. Focus on learning your role and making a good first impression with colleagues.

Be a Team Player:

  • Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions: It’s better to ask for clarification than to make a mistake. Your colleagues would rather help you succeed than watch you struggle.
  • Introduce Yourself: Be proactive and introduce yourself to your new team members. A friendly smile and a “hello” go a long way in creating a positive first impression and will help you win over some supportive new workmates.
  • Be Open to Learning: Remember, you’re there to learn. Be receptive to feedback and guidance from your more experienced colleagues. Better to show your interest and ability to learn, over trying to prove you already know it.
  • Bonus Tip: Practice mindfulness techniques like deep breathing or meditation before your first day.  Taking a few minutes to centre yourself can significantly reduce anxiety and improve your focus.

Remember, everyone experiences first-day nerves.  By being prepared, adopting a positive mindset, and embracing your new role as a team player, you’ll be well on your way to a fantastic first day in your new healthcare job.
